The Night Listener (2006) Review: Ranking Robin Williams’ Catfishing Thriller
Is The Night Listener (2006) a good movie? The Night Listener is a well-acted but predictable 2006 psychological thriller. While Robin Williams and Toni Collette deliver outstanding performances, the film reveals its central mystery far too early, landing it in the middle of our ultimate movie ranking and review.
The Premise: What is The Night Listener About?
Gabriel Noone (Robin Williams) is a late-night radio host whose life is unraveling after a painful breakup. While on the air, he connects with Pete, a young fan who claims to be a severely abused, terminally ill teenager. The two strike up an intense emotional bond over the phone, but when Gabriel suspects that Pete may not actually exist, he travels to meet Pete’s guardian, Donna (Toni Collette), sparking a psychological mystery about truth and deception.
What Works: Incredible Acting and Telephone Tension
The film's saving grace is its cast. Toni Collette is exceptionally excellent, playing a quietly devastating antagonist whose lies are visibly fueled by loneliness and pain. Robin Williams does incredibly strong work portraying the psychological torment of a man unraveling while searching for the truth. Furthermore, making the catfishing almost entirely phone-based is highly effective; every ringing phone carries tension and dread.
What Doesn't Work: No Thrills, No Mystery
For a thriller to work, the audience has to be left guessing. The Night Listener shows its cards far too early, maintaining ambiguity for only about 15 minutes before it becomes painfully obvious that Robin Williams is being catfished. Most of the film is spent watching him try to emotionally prove something both he and the audience already know is true.
The Robin Williams Ranking & Performance Score
Robin Williams Performance Score:RETIRED Out of respect for Robin's battle with undiagnosed Lewy Body Dementia, we have officially retired our performance score rating.
Good Mourning Robin Ranking: In our ranking, it sits just above the animated film Robots. It is a shame this was released before online catfishing fully entered the cultural zeitgeist, making it feel less mysterious today.
