Awakenings (1990) - Ranking Every Robin Williams Movie
As part of Good Morning Robin, I’m revisiting every Robin Williams movie in theatrical release order to see how his career develops one film at a time. Some films show off his famous comedic energy, while others reveal the depth he could bring to serious drama. This stop on the journey takes us to Awakenings (1990), a quiet and deeply emotional film that pairs Robin Williams with Robert De Niro in one of the most thoughtful roles of his career.
Review: Awakenings (1990)
Awakenings tells the story of Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Robin Williams), a shy and socially awkward neurologist who begins working at a hospital filled with patients suffering from a mysterious catatonic condition. Many of these patients have spent decades trapped in a frozen state, aware of the world around them but unable to move or communicate.
While studying the patients, Sayer begins to suspect that a new experimental drug might be able to bring them back.
One patient in particular, Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), becomes the center of his work. When the drug is administered, Leonard suddenly wakes up after being trapped inside his own body for years. For a brief time, he gets to experience the world again. Music, movement, relationships, and the simple act of living suddenly become possible.
What follows is both inspiring and heartbreaking.
Robin Williams plays Dr. Sayer with remarkable restraint. This is one of the quietest performances of his career. Instead of the rapid-fire energy audiences often expected from him, he leans into vulnerability and gentleness. Sayer is not a confident hero. He is a thoughtful observer who slowly finds courage as he begins to connect with his patients.
The emotional weight of the film comes from the relationship between Sayer and Leonard. Robert De Niro gives an extraordinary physical performance as a man rediscovering life, while Williams grounds the story with empathy and patience.
Director Penny Marshall keeps the tone intimate and human. The film avoids melodrama for the most part and focuses on the small moments that make life meaningful. A walk outside. A conversation. A dance.
Watching Awakenings today, it stands out as one of the most compassionate films in Robin Williams’ career. It shows his ability to disappear into a character who leads with kindness rather than spectacle.
